What is Hypnotherapy?
Solution Focused Approach
A short-term goal-focused evidence-based therapeutic approach, which incorporates positive psychology principles and practices, and which helps clients change by constructing solutions rather than focusing on problems.
Psychotherapy
A form of talking therapy that combines solution focused questioning with trance relaxation and neuro-education. It allows clients to overcome issues and move forward setting a succession of small goals to attain.
Hypnotic states
Meditation and hypnosis share some phenomenological characteristics: both are states of focused attention; and both can be used to produce a deep sense of relaxation. However, there are important differences too: in meditation there is often a focus on one stimulus (e.g. the breath, a candle, a mantra) with the intention of clearing the mind, and there is often a spiritual element to meditation that is absent with hypnosis; hypnosis has a more specific purpose and directs clients to focus on (and generate) uplifting imagery & feelings. It’s a very gentle and creative headspace.
Mindfulness
Practicing mindfulness can be a big help when it comes to alleviating anxiety. Developing an awareness of one’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours using mindfulness techniques can help to break negative habits and improve self-esteem. In therapy we use this as a tool for encourages you to be aware of the moment you are in now, allowing you to become more aware of your thoughts (and more able to let them drift by, like leaves on a stream). What we practice we get good at, so learning how to practice the right frame of mind and being present is invaluable to our continued happiness in life.
